Conservancy Offers Free Firewood – Up to Two Cords Available Per Permit
South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – July 8, 2014 – The California Tahoe Conservancy is offering free permits for up to two cords of wood as part of their Community Firewood Program. More than 170 people have already picked up a 90-day permit, typically available from May through October. Now in its 11th year, the program distributes almost 400 permits annually.
“Everybody wins. The community helps us move wood from places where it poses a fuel hazard, and we help the community to stay warm in the winter,” said Milan Yeates of the Conservancy, who oversees the Community Firewood Program.
As a major landowner in the Basin, the Conservancy treats about 100 acres by hand per year. Usable wood generated by these treatments is bucked into rounds for public collection by permit holders. Free Community Firewood Program permits and location maps can be picked up at the Conservancy office at 1061 Third Street. Additional permit conditions apply.
The Conservancy asks the public to respect the safety of the crews conducting the field work by not picking up the wood until they have left the site. The rounds are placed by the side of the road after treatment.
For more information stop by the Conservancy office or call the firewood information line, updated weekly, at (530) 543-6061.
Established in 1984, the mission of the Tahoe Conservancy is to lead California’s efforts to restore and enhance the extraordinary natural and recreational resources of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
