Conservancy Organizes Distribution of 200 Free Bags.  Efforts Support Community Sustainability.

South Lake Tahoe, California – January 21, 2014 – “Remember your reusable bags,” touts the sign outside of Grocery Outlet. Thanks to the Conservancy distribution of 200 reusable bags, today’s first 200 EBT (food stamp) users at Grocery Outlet will walk away with a free cloth tote.

“Conservation is not something you do on a Saturday afternoon, it’s an everyday step towards creating a sustainable Tahoe community,” said Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) Executive Director Patrick Wright.

The bags feature the California and Nevada Tahoe license plates. Over 96% of the funds raised through the sale of Tahoe license plates support hiking and biking trails and watershed restoration projects such as the Lower Blackwood Creek Restoration, Sawmill Bike Trail and Rabe Meadow Bike Path. California Tahoe Conservancy and Nevada Division of State Lands are beneficiaries of the plate fees.

When the Conservancy approached Grocery Outlet, they were eager to participate.

“We suggested that the bags go towards EBT users to help them take part in the sustainability initiative,” said Grocery Outlet manager Kim Schouten.

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s single-use plastic bag ban went into effect on January 15, 2014. All shoppers will now pay a nominal fee for paper bags and are encouraged to utilize reusable bags.

Established in 1984, the mission of the Conservancy is to lead California’s efforts to restore and enhance the extraordinary natural and recreational resources of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
